Life in coastal meadows in the summer

There is plenty to see in coastal meadows in the summer. Grazers, such the sheep along Rantapromenadi and the highland cattle in Krottilanlahti, keep the vegetation low and maintain a diverse range of insect species, from dung beetles to various dipterans, such as flies. Among the larger grazers roam barnacle goose broods, while northern lapwings and little ringed plovers are also raising their young. The common redshank and the common snipe stand out with their distinct calls. Coastal pastures also attract a wide range of insectivores, such as white wagtails, meadow pipits, swallows and house martins, with the latter two hunting low on the ground. Grazing animals are also often accompanied by cheerfully chattering flocks of common starlings.
